Our story started centuries ago...

From Farfa...

Take a moment to pause and picture in your mind a completely different Europe than the one you know today. It is the year 476 a.c., the scourge of the barbaric invasions caused the fall of the Wester Roman Empire. Italy is in dismay. All certainties are gone, cities are continuously looted and sacked by barbarians and other criminals, and cultivations destroyed. In the IV Century, Benedictine monks following the monastic rule of St. Benedict of Norcia, decided to react to the moral and spiritual decay that hit Europe so violently. They started by building monasteries and creating vineyards which had been destroyed almost completely as a consequence of the barbaric invasions. Why vineyards? Wine was - as still is - a central part of the Catholic liturgy of the Mass and as the monks' most precious treasure, along with the flour for the Eucharist, it needed to be protected at any cost. To this end, they started using cellars built underneath their monasteries to hide and preserve the wine from the many looting they were victims of. They also started to use barrels to store their wine and preserving it at a certain temperature. This new practices had a huge impact on the wine itself, transforming it from the sweet wine the Romans and the Greeks used to drink to the more aromatic and complex wine of today. It is not a coincidence that the vocabulary we use today in the viticultural world is imbued with monastic terms (Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos, etc.).

The monks started a journey that would never end. In the IX Century, the rule of law was reestablished in Europe and commercial routes started flourishing again. The French historian Georges Duby describes this period as the "birth of modern viticulture." A true transfer of viticultural knowledge from the monks to the farmers took place, creating what Duby describes as the first modern "democratic process." In the XII Century, the Abbey of Farfa arose as one of the main protagonists of this incredible wine renaissance.

...to Moresco...

From the Abbey of Farfa the Benedictine monks decided to bring their knowledge to Moresco. There, they planted multiple vineyards to serve their nearby monastery, and shared their knowledge and traditions with the local farmers. The farmers saw in the traditions and practices of the monks a new opportunity to develop a true art: winemaking.
In Moresco, as in other parts of Italy and Europe, monks and farmers worked together to establish the foundation for the diffusion of what is considered today modern viticulture.

The same traditions, the same spirit of collaboration, the same passion that unified the Benedictine monks and the old farmers find their place of honor in our wines.

Our wines are the expression of high technical specialization in the cultivation of vines based on centuries old traditions, profound bond with our land, the dignity and beauty of human work, and the intimate relation we have with each and every one of our wines.
